ABS: It is a synthetic plastic containing acrylonitrile, butadiene and ethylene.

The graft copolymer products of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene are named after the first letter of their English names. It is a resin with high strength, good toughness, and excellent comprehensive properties. It has a wide range of uses and is often used as an engineering plastic. In industry, polybutadiene latex or styrene butadiene rubber with low styrene content is the main chain, and it is made by graft copolymerization with a mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene. In fact, it is often a mixture of butadiene-containing graft polymer and acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer SAN or AS. In recent years, two monomers, styrene and acrylonitrile, are copolymerized first, and then mixed with graft copolymerized ABS resin in different proportions to prepare various ABS resins suitable for different purposes. Industrial production in the United States began in the mid-1950s.

Industrial production methods can be divided into two categories: one is to mechanically blend polybutadiene or styrene butadiene rubber and SAN resin on a roller, or to blend two latexes and then copolymerize; the other is to polymerize Butadiene or styrene butadiene latex with low content of styrene is added with styrene and acrylonitrile monomers for emulsion graft copolymerization, or mixed with SAN resin in different proportions.

Structure, properties and application In ABS resin, the rubber particles are in the dispersed phase and dispersed in the continuous phase of SAN resin. When impacted, the cross-linked rubber particles bear and absorb this energy, dispersing the stress, preventing cracks from developing, thereby improving the tear resistance.

The purpose of graft copolymerization is to improve the compatibility and adhesion of the rubber particle surface with the resin phase. This is related to the amount of free SAN resin and the composition of the SAN resin grafted on the rubber backbone. The difference between the content of acrylonitrile in the two resins should not be too large, otherwise the compatibility will be poor and it will cause cracks at the rubber-resin interface.

ABS resin can be processed into plastic by molding methods such as injection molding, extrusion, vacuum, blow molding, and mixing, and secondary processing can also be performed by mechanical, bonding, coating, and vacuum evaporation methods. Because of its excellent comprehensive performance and a wide range of uses, it is mainly used as engineering materials and can also be used for household appliances. Because of its good oil resistance, acid, alkali, salt and chemical reagent resistance, and its ability to be electroplated, it has the advantages of good gloss, light specific gravity and low price after plating the metal layer. It can be used to replace certain metals. It can also be synthesized into many varieties such as self-extinguishing type and heat-resistant type to adapt to various purposes.
